1979—1980年，在前人工作的基础上，对东起大渡河，西止立启河，北迄康定，南达徐挖的贡嘎山地区进行了地理考察。本文主要论述贡嘎山地区的地质构造特征。

Gongga mountainous region is located in east of Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. The Indo-China movement and Yenshan movement caused tow groups of NW and NE trending rifts in this region, forming a typical rhomboidal pattern of structure. The himalayan movement also caused a group of NEE rift, which was eartirely dominating the distribution of the present morphology, hydrographic net and glaciers in this region. Since Quaterary, this region has become the highest zone in the east of Qinghai-Xizang Plateau with its strong uplift.
For a long time, it has been infered that the dominast peak of Gongga Mountain is mainly composed of Late yenshananian monzonitic granite, and located at the axis of Mt. Gongga synclinorium. By asalysing moraine materials at the west flank of the dominant peak is composed of malmstone and slate of Triassic period and situated on the uniclinal structure plunging east wards.
Since Quaternsry, two large glacial activities have occured round the dominant peak, and a lot of ancient and present moraine materials still have been preserved to this day. Alluvial and pluvial deposits (mainly of debris flow orign) have commonly developed along the rive valley, and various gravitational and chemical desposits as well since Holocene.
Up to now, the meotectonic movement of Gongga mountainous region still attracts all attention. The neotectonic movement appears as: the most rift zones are seismic zones, a lot of hot springs are all distributed along these rift zones, multiple planation surfaces developed in this region, and the phenomenon of valley in valley may be seen, debir flows occur frquently and various gravitational deposits exist widely.
