The effect of tribo-chemical reactions of mating materials on tribological behaviors of the B4C film in various relative humidity environments

英文摘要Tribo-chemical reactions of mating materials have a significant effect on tribological properties, while the effect on B4C is poorly studied. Therefore, we investigated the B4C films sliding against three counterparts (Al2O3, AISI 52100 steel and WC ball) and observed that the B4C films sliding against different counterparts exhibits different tribological performances at the same relative humidity, which is ascribed to different tribo-chemical reactions. The formation of nanocrystalline WO3 by the oxidation of WC results in B4C/WC system obtaining the lowest friction coefficient and wear rate. AISI 52100 steel and B4C were oxidized to produce Fe3+ and B2O3/H3BO3,which leads to an intermediate value. However, there was no chemical reaction for Al2O3 due to its excellent chemical inertness, which brings about the highest value. This demonstrates that choosing proper mating material can effectively improve the tribological behaviors of the B4C films.
