中文摘要Using GIS (Geographic Information System) and the USLE (Universal Soil Loss Equation), soil erosion was computed and graded for the Toutunhe River Basin, a small basin originating in the Tianshan Mountains. Based on precipitation, topographic, vegetation and soil erosion factor values, the soil erosion per unit area was calculated first for different natural areas. Then, the distribution of soil erosion and its intensity was determined based on the various colors of the soil erosion picture made by the GIS. In the upper reaches of the basin, soil erosion was less than 0.25 t ha(-1) y(-1). Soil erosion was between 0.10-0.75 t ha(-1) yr(-1) middle reaches with high sediment yield and high soil erosion (20-70 t ha(-1) yr(-1)) in the lower reaches. The results obtained from the GIS and the USLE are in accordance with those obtained by the field investigation and observed data.
