MeV C-ion induced grain boundary crack at 316L SS surface

英文摘要Solution-annealed and 20% cold-worked austenitic 316L stainless steel sample was irradiated at 500degreesC with 51.4 MeV C-ions to 1.14x10(18) ions/cm(2). After irradiation, the sample was investigated at room temperature by scanning probe microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy with cross-section technique, respectively. The observations showed that carbon ion bombardment led to cracking along grain boundaries and compositional change at the irradiated surface. The measured crack along a grain boundaries was of about 400 run in depth and more than 1000 nm in width. The main compositional elements Fe and Ni become richer but Cr, Mn and Mo become poorer in the valley of the cracking along grain boundary. The possible origins of these observed phenomena were discussed.
