中文摘要With diminishing resources of fossil fuels, much effort has been devoted to convert biomass into organic bulk chemicals1, 2. Levulinate esters as important commercially available intermediates were mainly obtained by the direct esterification of levulinic acid with the alkyl alcohols in the presence of mineral acids. Yet, direct application of Lewis acid catalysts usually leads to discharge of highly toxic byproducts to the environment, contamination of the final product with metal salts, and difficulties in separation. Therefore, developing of a more facile method for the production of levulinate esters is strongly preferable3. A clean, facile, and environment-friendly method has been developed to convert furfuryl alcohol into alkyl levulinates catalyzed by a novel solid catalyst (Fig. 1). The catalyst was an organic-inorganic hybrid material, which was composed of organic cation and inorganic anion, namely methylimidazolebutylsulfate phosphotungstate [MIMBS]3PW12O40) (Fig. 2). A study for optimization of reaction conditions such as the reaction time, temperature, the substrate ration, and the catalyst amount has been performed. [MIMBS]3PW12O40 shows the highest catalytic activity in comparison with other catalysts, and we could obtain butyl levulinate in 87.8% yield under the optimal conditions. This method is potential as an energy-efficient and cost-effective approach for the conversion of biomass into platform chemicals.
