Non-catalytic synthesis of vertically aligned CNTs arrays and metal functionalization

中文摘要because of superior electrical, structural and mechanical properties, carbon nanotubes (cnts) have shown great potential applications in electronic industry, field emissions, gas sensors and catalysis. however, conventional synthesis methods always need metal particles as catalyst to decompose hydrocarbon. it is difficult to gain pure cnts even after complex post-synthesis treatments. herein, we display a non-catalytic synthesis method of vertically aligned cnts arrays by sic thermal decomposition. the cnts growth mechanism of sic thermal decomposition was investigated by annealing sic crystals under different atmospheres, including inert, oxidative and reductive atmospheres. thick surface carbon structures were studied by sem, tem and raman spectra. the cnws (carbon nanowalls) structure composed of partially curved carbon sheets can form in inert atmosphere. in reductive atmosphere, similar cnws structure, but with better graphitic quality were observed. well-aligned cnts arrays standing vertically on the surface can only be observed in oxidative atmosphere, such as o2, h2o, alcohols, aethers and so on. most of them are close-ended mwnts with small inner diameters, 4 - 6 nm. by comparing cnts structures prepared in different oxygen-containing gases, it is demonstrated that strong oxidative atmosphere will be more advantageous in cnts growth. to further explore the application of cnts in catalysis, we functionalized the cnts with metal particles, such as pt and ni. because of the controlled etching of cnts, metal particles can be embedded into cnts arrays by annealing in 1atm h2. the etching process was studied by sem and ar-xps.
