中文摘要marine bioproducts engineering: a new discipline contributed to sustainable exploitation of the ocean wei zhang* nearly three-quarters of the earth’s surface is covered by the oceans. the vast tracts of water has proven to be home of a rich source of both biological and chemical diversity, including many species that have no counterparts on dry land. marine biodiversity, as a result of billions of years of evolution, thus offers an incredible reservoir of novel natural products with potential applications in almost every major industrial sector including health, environment, energy, food, chemicals, advanced materials and national defense. the search for natural products of medicinal use derived from the sea has a long history. ancient chinese medical books describe the use of seaweed to treat abscesses, menstrual disorders, and cancer, and the romans used an extract of stingray spines to treat the pain of toothache. however, this resource remained largely untapped until 50 years ago when bergman and feeney (1951) started the first serious work on studying marine natural products. since then, more than 10,000 novel natural products have already been isolated from a small number of the marine species studied. patent applications have been growing steadily for the past three decades. these patents deal with applications of natural products as pharmaceuticals, nutriceuticals, cosmetics, agrichemicals, novel enzymes and research tools for the biomedical sciences. a potential multi-billion dollar market value exits for each class of marine bioproducts. unfortunately, this exciting market value has rarely turned into a commercial reality despite many endeavors have been made. an assessment of the current status of commercial development indicates that the huge challenge for minimal commercialization is due to the lack of sustainable supply of the bioproducts. this problem has been recognized as pharmacoapoptosis – “programmed drug death” in the area of marine pharmaceutical development. to bridge the gaps between discovery and commercialization of these tantalizing bioactive compounds, marine bioproducts engineering holds the key for its success. skills and expertise of bioprocess engineers can well contribute to develop methods for sustainable production of sufficient amounts of compounds for the functional test and market demand. in this presentation, we will be discussing the problems, challenges and opportunities for marine bioproducts engineers, relating to the discovery, development and sustainable production of marine natural products. aiming at a timely transformation of the scientific discovery into commercial reality, marine bioproducts engineers will find it the most rewarding practice of utilizing their expertise in diving into the ocean.
