Statistical analysis of the ionospheric Chapman scale height at Beijing

英文摘要The Chapman scale height around F-2 peak (H-m) can be used to extrapolate the topside electron density profile. In this paper, plenty of manual work has been done to scale the ionograms recorded at Beijing (40. 3 degrees N, 116. 2 degrees E) during the period from January 2010 to May 2014, and the scale height H-m around F-2 peak is deduced. The diurnal, seasonal and solar activity variations of H-m are statistically analyzed, and the correlations between H-m and the F-2 peak parameters f(o)F(2), h(m)F(2) and the IRI bottomside thickness parameter B-0 are also discussed. The present study showed that, (1) H-m has an obvious diurnal variation with the peak occurring around noontime and the valley occurring at midnight. For winter seasons, the diurnal variation has two valleys with one after sunrise and the other at about 20 : 00LT. H-m has an increase before sunrise, but it is not distinct. (2) H-m during daytime shows a clear seasonal variation with the maximum in summer and minimum in winter, while exhibits a much weaker seasonal variation at night. (3) H-m increases with increasing solar activity, and significantly deviates from normal behavior during geomagnetic disturbance. (4) The correlation between H-m and h(m)F(2) is very weak, while they have a moderate correlation during nighttime and daytime respectively, and the former is stronger than the latter. H-m is strongly correlated with thickness parameter B-0. (5) The small correlation between H-m, and B-0 from IRI2012 in winter indicates that the IRI model needs further improvement.
