Attention-induced frontal brain activation in adolescents using near-infrared imaging

中文摘要Brain activities can be monitored non-invasively by near-infrared spectroscopy and imaging technique, which has several advantages in comparison with other imaging methods, such as less restraining, high temporal resolution, and biochemical specificity. The aim of our study was to examine the feasibility of our NIR imaging system in functional brain activation studies with cognition paradigms. The continuous wave NIR imaging system has been developed in our lab, which consists of 9 sources and 4 detectors. The wavelength of 808 nm laser diode is used as light source. With measurement of relative changes from some baseline, serials of images can be reconstructed corresponding to the variety of regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) during cognitive tests or in clinical situation. The study included 12 subjects (male; mean age =14.6) with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 13 healthy comparison subjects (2 female and 11 male; mean age =14.2). These adolescents consent underwent NIR imaging for the frontal cortex while performance a version of the color-naming Stroop tests. The tests procedure included three test cycles interrupted by relax breaks. In the course of the test, a significant increase of rCBV was observed in the right frontal region for the comparison subjects, whereas a significant increase of rCBV was observed on both sides for the subjects with ADHD. Brain activation leads to an increase in cerebral blood flow and volume. The results are in accordance with the reports on a reduction in prefrontal volume, predominantly in the right hemisphere.
