英文摘要We studied the evolution of nearly semi-detached binaries with a giant star and a WD companion by including atmospheric Roche lobe overflow (RLOF). The study shows that atmospheric RLOF may greatly increase the mass transfer rate as the donor approaches Roche Lobe filling, then the WD companion has more chance to erupt, and eventually, is more likely to be observed as a symbiotic, in comparison to that without atmospheric RLOF. A relatively comprehensive investigation indicates that the lifetime of a symbiotic system in the stage R-d > 0.9R(L) (where ellipsoidal variability is expected to be observed) is comparable to that of R-d < 0.9R(L) when the orbital period is less than 1000 d, and the former is larger than the latter in many cases.
